For my father's 65th birthday, I wanted to take him to what he always wanted to do: we are big fisherman and he always wanted to head to Northern Ontario fly-in camp, to fish for 3-5 days. This was around COVID time (2020/2021) and when checking the prices for just the lodge (and not food, transport to get there, etc.) and fishing, it was all going to be north of $4,000.00 CAD for any place I looked up. Indeed, many had a wide variety of species to catch, but all specialised in just one or two species. After seeing that, I immediately thought, "for that price, why don't I just take him down south to fish on the ocean?" Thus I decided that for his 70th birthday, I would do just that, especially since my father has never fished north of Parry Sound, east of Ottawa and west of Hamilton, in his entire life.
I had originally planned to go to Casa Vieja Lodge in Guatemala and had saved up almost half of the cost, over 2 years in advance. I arranged a payment plan with them and was all set to go... until I got into a car accident and the repairs immediately drained me of all that I had saved up. With about 15 months to go before his birthday, I wanted to still get this done and pivoted to anything that was a lesser cost... When my father jokingly mentioned catching Tarpon in our lakes here in Southern Ontario, Monsta Tarpon immediately popped into my head, having seen a video review of their operation, back in 2022. Doing more research on Trinidad, the company and the species itself, it all seemed like a great pivot and when I saw that the whole trip (all-in) was going to be less than half of the Guatemala trip, I was sold and started saving up again.
About 5 months before the trip, I contacted Jonathan, the Owner and Captain and played around with dates: I wanted to pick a set of days closest to the New Moon and June itself is a busy month for my family (my dad's birthday, my birthday, a few other family members' birthdays and other events), so mid-May made most sense. They were busy with the Trinidad Marlin Tournament, so the last week in May was booked. Jonathan also gave me a recommendation for hotel and set us up with transport to and from the hotel (the driver's name is Aaron and he also took us on a quick drive to Maracas Beach for Bake and Shark the day of our flight. Aaron is an absolutely wonderful human being, a great guy to ask about the island and a stellar driver. I wish I could review him here on TripAdvisor, but cannot find his business!), thus we were all set!
Once arriving and eating breakfast on the first day, Jonathan picked us up at the end of the Crews Inn Marina's dock and we set out. The water was choppier than usual for the time of year, but it was still nothing unsafe or unfishable and the boat we used, Monsta, was more than seaworthy, not to mention that Jonathan is an ace captain, who knows the entire area like the back of his hand. Our mate for all three days was Jacob, a young guy with a ton of knowledge himself and immensely helpful, another great person to have spent our time with. Getting to know him and Jonathan (and Aaron, the driver), we really came to learn the Trinidad way of life and how the people are: level-headed, helpful and hardworking people.
As we blasted to the first spot, Jacob setup the rods and once we were there, we would drift fish for Tarpon, casting out small sardines on circle hooks. About 10 minutes in, the first rod goes off and I grab it. A 5ish minute fight reveals not a tarpon, but a Crevalle Jack! At 10 pounds or so, it wasn't that big, but it was the biggest Jack I'd ever caught in my life, so I was happy nonetheless. 2 minutes after landing it, my father's reel goes off and he's on with a Tarpon: feeling these bigger fish pull, I truly don't think my father was ready for it! After another 5 minute fight or so, his first Tarpon is landed and he is stoked. 5 minutes after his, I get one on my rod and soon after, I'm on the board as well. Not even 30 minutes into the trip and already 3 fish landed: this boded well for our best day, numbers-wise. We would have hits from Needlefish as well throughout the trip, with me landing 4, my dad 2 and all being released. We landed 12 that first day, with my dad getting a couple 60+ pounders: 5 for my dad, 7 for me and no lost fish.
Day 2 started off largely the same as day 1, hitting the same first spot. My dad had the first fish this time, a fish that screamed a good 2/3 of the line off the rod (went into the backing), before the line going slack: Jonathan estimated that it was a true giant (potentially over 100 pounds), but as we never saw it surface, we'll never know. A few minutes later, I too am into a substantial fish, which *did* surface and it too looked to be close to 100 pounds... until my line went slack as well. That was an omen for the rest of the day, as we caught only 7 Tarpon, with only 5 landed (4 by me, 1 by my dad). An hour and bit at that spot produced nothing, so Jonathan gunned it to the far end of a further-out island and I started catching again, including 3 straight over 60 pounds: my back and arms were getting sore! Another 2 hours went by with nothing, then to one last spot for the last 20 minutes or so and I got one solid 35 pounder to end the day.
Day 3, my dad decided to do a 4 hour day instead of 6, but we had our best bang for buck day, with 10 Tarpon (8 landed: 6 for me, 1 for my dad and 1 shared) and it started with a 10 pounder for me, followed by the biggest fish landed for the trip. After my dad fought it for 25-30 minutes, I finished off the final 10 or so and it came boatside, an absolute tank of a Tarpon. When trying to unhook though, the hook actually broke off at the tip, so no good picture was taken. We headed in after I landed 5 more and spent another 15 minutes or so talking with Jonathan and Jacob (and I had forgotten part of the fee back at the hotel, so had to run back and get it), before thanking them, sharing a hug and seeing them off.
29 Tarpon for the trip, 25 landed, for basically 10 a day: can't ask for much more. Jonathan is a splendid human being and one of the best charter captains I have ever been with. He cares about the fishery, his clients and is a great photographer to boot, while he also has a ton of knowledge about life in general, as well as what it means to be a decent person. He runs a tight ship and my father and I have both said that we would love to make it down there to fish with him and Jacob again... if the cards fall right!
Thanks again to the entire Monsta Tarpon crew, you guys are the absolute best!
