点评:Having visited the interior of the ruined Abbey of San Galgano, we learned that the ticket also includes this museum, located in the center of Chiusdino. So in the late afternoon, we drove up to the town to visit it.
It's well organized and managed. Housed in the historic Palazzo Taddei, it extends three stories above ground and three underground. The majority of the exhibition space is dedicated to paintings, sacred furnishings, and countless reliquaries, large and small, from the early modern and modern periods, some of which are quite valuable. For example, on the third basement floor, there is a very complete 19th-century gilded metal service for the liturgy of the Mass, originating from the nearby village of Frosini, formerly owned by the Feroni family.
But it's on the first floor that the medieval pieces, the most precious in the collection, are located. Here you can admire — to name just a few — a valuable panel with the "Madonna and Child" by Niccolò di Segna; the sumptuous reliquary for the head of Saint Galgano; and the gilded bronze and enamel crown used to adorn such head of Saint Galgano on special occasions.
The captions are only partially bilingual, Italian/English.
Also noteworthy on the ground floor are two models depicting the fortified village of Miranduolo, in the Chiusdino area (now-ruined), dating back to the 9th and 11th centuries respectively, documenting the transformation from a village of wood and straw to a village of stone.
As an additional highlight, we would like to mention the museum's opening hours, which are remarkable for such a remote town: continuous hours, every day from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm in the winter months, until 7:00 pm or 8:00 pm in the other months.
