I’ve travelled to quite a few beautiful places over the years, but my recent visit to Horseshoe Pass in Llangollen genuinely took my breath away. The drive up alone is something special, the road twists and curves through the hills in a way that makes you slow down and really take it all in. When you reach the top, the views stretch for miles across the valleys, dotted with sheep and rolling green fields. It’s the sort of landscape that makes you feel both peaceful and alive at the same time.
I stopped at the Ponderosa Café near the summit, and sat outside just soaking up the scenery. The air felt so clean, and there was a lovely sense of calm up there.
Afterwards, I headed down into Llangollen itself, and what a charming little town that is. The River Dee runs right through it, and you can hear the sound of the rushing water as you walk along the old bridge. There are plenty of independent shops and cafés, and the people are warm and welcoming. I even took a stroll along the canal, where the horses still tow the old narrowboats, a lovely nod to history.
In the evening, I visited Gales Wine Bar, which turned out to be the perfect way to round off the day. The atmosphere was cosy and relaxed, with great food and an impressive wine list. It had a welcoming, local feel that made me want to linger long after finishing my meal.
All in all, Horseshoe Pass and Llangollen are absolute gems of North Wales. Whether you’re there for the views, a good walk, or just a peaceful day out, it’s a place that stays with you. I’ll definitely be back, next time with my camera and maybe a picnic.
