点评:Charlemagne Tower dates back to the Middle Ages and is one of the main sights in the historic centre of Tours. It’s best seen at the same time as St Martin’s Basilica, which is just across the road and the Tour de l'Horloge (Clock Tower) which is nearby.
Built in the 10th century, what you see here today are the last remnants of an old collegiate church dedicated to St Martin of Tours. It was never a stand-alone tower but part of the original basilica which is long-gone.
It’s amazing that anything of this ancient tower is still standing. It very nearly wasn’t.
Large sections of new brick and stone were added in the mid 1900s to help support what was left of the crumbling tower but it’s easy to tell the new parts from the old.
You can climb the 248 steps of the tower as part of a guided tour although we didn’t. Instead we stopped briefly on Rue des Halles to look at it and read the information panels out the front. You get a very clear and unobstructed view of the tower from the street and we could easily make out the figures on one of the ornate carved capitals which was part of a supporting column. Some of the figures were a bit worse for wear but we could still see a large central figure with a beard surrounded by a number of animals which we thought could be lions. Later we learnt that it was in fact a scene of Daniel in the lion’s den, particularly popular story in medieval times.
