点评:My partner and I took the ferry from Point Lookout to Smith Island on May 30, and unfortunately it was one of the most concerning passenger vessel experiences I've had.
The trip over was choppy but uneventful. The return trip, however, was extremely rough. Before departure, many passengers wanted to sit inside because of the weather, but there was not enough interior seating. What surprised me most was that much of the seating consisted of unsecured patio chairs. As conditions worsened, chairs were tipping and lifting off the deck with passengers sitting in them. Loose items were also falling around the cabin, including what appeared to be a VHF radio from the helm.
Two of the three cabin doors became jammed by passengers unable to open during the crossing, leaving passengers with limited access in and out of the cabin. Several passengers, many of them elderly, became seasick as conditions deteriorated. I ended up helping distribute bags, paper towels, water, and even ice to sick passengers because there appeared to be little to no crew presence in the cabin during the roughest part of the trip.
I understand that weather cannot be controlled, and I want to be clear that my concern is not with encountering rough water. My concern is with passenger safety and lack of preparedness when conditions become difficult. Unsecured seating, jammed doors, loose equipment, and a complete lack of visible assistance for passengers left me feeling unsafe and completely disappointed.
I have spent a lot of time on the water, and I know things can change quickly. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this ferry service unless significant improvements are made to passenger safety and crew responsiveness. I have reached out to Smith Island Cruises and have followed up, with no response. Very disappointing.
