Good company, great guide in the non Danakil portion of the trip but uneven delivery of all services

点评：My partner and I did the 10 day north (capital/Lalibela/Gondar/Bahir Dir) and Danakil Depression tour. The attention and guidance provided on the non Danakil portion of the tour was very good with Tesfaye being a kind and wonderful guide and the drivers were all great. Especially important was the care provided by Tes and the driver when our travels were temporarily interrupted by robberies of money and phones of occupants of vehicles on our route by a militia group. Through the efforts of Tes and the driver, we avoided any issues.
The company dropped the ball on the Danakil portion of the tour as it was subcontracted to another operator that gave us little attention and guidance focusing all of their attention on a group of 9 Russians. But for the acts of Abel (our driver), we would not have known what to do or given a table and food to eat. The depression, although spectacular in parts, was difficult for older people as there were no toilet or bathing opportunities, we slept outdoors on a thin mattress and the weather was very hot.
Hotels on the non Danakil part of the trip were hit or miss with decent food and accommodation in Addis and Lalibela. The food at the Haile resort in Gondar was awful and its presence near a church with all night loud religious chanting made sleep (even with earplugs) difficult. The food at Bahir Dar was good but the room temperature was set at a very high level making for a difficult sleep. We opened the sliding door but sleeping with the mosquito net was not comfortable.
Overall, there were good and not so good moments. We appreciated the people who took care of us but also felt sadness at the situation in the country with lawlessness and the prospect of additional conflict to a population that needs peace just to try to make ends meet.
