The Shay locomotive on display, along with other equipment, is particularly interesting. My great-grandfather was a telegraph operator for the railroad so that display was even more fascinating personally.
An interesting detail from the exhibition is the mention of what are termed 'set-off houses,' which could be considered the earliest form of "mobile homes." Essentially, the railroad transported small houses on flat cars and used cranes to place them next to the tracks for the families of employees. A close replica of a set-off house is on display at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center in Townsend.
Some of the facts about the logging in the area were worrisome when viewed by today's standards.
