A Memorable Steam Train Ride with a Couple of Disappointments

点评：We enjoyed our trip aboard the historic Cass Scenic Railroad to Bald Knob. Riding behind an authentic steam locomotive that once hauled logs down the mountain was a fascinating experience. The mountain scenery was beautiful, and the commentary along the way provided just the right amount of information about the railroad’s history and the sights we were passing.
There were, however, two disappointments that kept us from giving this experience five stars.
First, the included lunch was well below our expectations. It mainly consisted of a rather basic, make-your-own sandwich with a hamburger roll that was somewhat stale. For an otherwise excellent excursion, the quality of the lunch was disappointing.
Second, the train was scheduled to return at 5:00 p.m., but an additional half-hour stop at a refreshment stand, which had not been mentioned in the original itinerary, delayed our arrival. We certainly understand that historic steam trains may experience delays, but this was a planned stop that should have been communicated in advance. We had arranged our afternoon around the published schedule because we wanted to reach our hotel before dark while traveling through the mountains.
Despite these shortcomings, we thoroughly enjoyed the train ride itself. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience a piece of railroad history while enjoying the beautiful West Virginia mountains. We would recommend the excursion, but suggest that visitors keep their expectations modest regarding the included lunch and allow extra time in their schedules.
