点评:I stumbled upon Flanders Fields Battlefield Daytours (and Jonas) by chance as I was scouring the Internet for a guide and tour that would suit my slightly different needs. I was traveling from Ghent and wanted to see those parts of the battlefield and the memorials pertinent to the Indian divisions who fought there in 1915-16. And FFBD was just perfect - we spent a great day visiting the battlefields, the preserved trenches, the lakes created by massive mine explosions, the museum at Ypres, the cemeteries and of course the Menin Gate Memorial - where I was able to pay tribute to the fallen (and largely forgotten in their own countries) Indians and Gurkhas - who brought bravely in totally alien conditions and died in a war not of their own making.
Jonas is a local man (unexploded ordnance was once recovered from his backyard) and therefore steeped in the history of not only the great battles of the Ypres Salient but also of the entire Flanders region. He is knowledgeable, well versed in several languages and very accommodating to boot. And it's not just history that you will get from him but also about life and times (and taxes) in modern day Belgium!
In short, if you want to spend a day in Ypres steeped in WW1 history and touring the lovely landscape that was an unimaginable hell for four bloody years, and also for insights into life in present day Flanders, you can do no better than to retain the services of Jonas Debaeke!
