点评:I took part in the 6-day/5-night expedition tour from El Coca to Iquitos from September 7 to September 12. Below, I’d like to share my experience and hope it helps future travelers:
Booking Process:
Since I was traveling alone, I sent an inquiry about a tour that had already been confirmed so I could join a group. Since there weren’t any available during the dates I requested, they kindly offered to run and organize the tour just for me, which I really appreciate! I paid the total amount for the tour in advance via bank transfer.
Tour Itinerary:
After confirming my arrival in El Coca, the tour began the following day. My guide picked me up from my lodging, and I received a brief briefing at the office.
That same day, we set out with another group to visit a local community. After a short canoe ride, we checked into a beautiful lodge there and went on two short walks (one during the day and one at night).
On the second day, we set out by boat together with the other group to visit a clay wall, hike to an observation tower, and visit an observation shelter to watch a clay lick.
After lunch, we were picked up by a public transport boat, and the guide and I continued on our own to Rocafuerte, where we took care of the exit stamp and checked into a hostel.
On the third day, after breakfast, we were picked up by our guide, who was in charge of meals and transportation for the next two days. After driving to Laguna Jatuncocha and observing wildlife there, we drove to another community on the Cocaya River, where we had dinner and set up our tents. In the evening, we went out on a boat to observe nocturnal animals, especially caimans.
On the fourth day, before breakfast, we watched river dolphins passing by for a short while; afterward, we took an extended boat trip to another lagoon, which included fishing. After lunch, we drove a short distance to Cabo Pantoja, where we took care of our entry stamps for Peru and exchanged money before our guide and escort said goodbye to me and returned to Ecuador.
On the fifth day, I set out early on the transport boat to Santa Clotilde. After about a 14-hour boat ride, I arrived in Santa Clotilde late in the evening.
On the sixth day, we also set out early in the morning for Mazan. There, after a short ride in a motorized taxi, we changed boats before continuing on to Iquitos (arrival around noon).
Staff:
Both the manager during the booking process and the guide and support staff were consistently friendly and helpful.
The guide, in particular, as my primary contact and the only English speaker on the tour (I don't speak Spanish), led me well. He provided me with excellent information for every activity, was himself passionate about wildlife observation, and always made sure I enjoyed the activities and had a diverse experience on my first rainforest tour.
I can't comment on the wildlife sightings during the activities, as neither the guide nor the organization can influence or guarantee them.
Food:
The food, whether at the community center or in the local restaurant, was always plentiful and, although simple, consistently delicious. Our support person from day three onward, in particular, cooked incredibly tasty meals with very basic ingredients.
Accommodation:
Day 1: Beautifully situated community lodge, lovely, spacious bungalows with running water, temporary electricity, and Wi-Fi; very friendly hosts (favorite of the tour)
Day 2: Hostel room with running water, electricity, Wi-Fi, and a fan (quite useful for drying clothes)
Day 3: Covered campsite at the community lodge with bathrooms, running water, electricity, and Wi-Fi
Day 4: Very basic hostel room, electricity and running water available from 6:00 PM
Day 5: Very basic hostel room, electricity also temporary; running water available upon arrival
Communication and Organization:
The itinerary provided states a 6-day tour to Iquitos. I only became aware that the guide and assistant would be returning to Ecuador around noon on day 4, after only 3.5 days, shortly before the tour started during the briefing (mentioned in passing by the guide). After reviewing my emails following the tour, I saw that it was initially described as a 4-day guided tour. I would recommend that the company communicate this process more proactively and clearly during the booking process. To be honest, this wasn't entirely clear to me until shortly before the tour started.
Therefore, it wasn't a 6-day guided tour, but rather a 3.5-day guided tour and a 2.5-day self-guided tour with the company pre-arranging transportation and accommodations. On the fourth day, I was given money back to pay for these.
Value for money:
Of the nearly $1300 USD, I received roughly $125 USD back on day 4 for accommodations, transportation, water, and food from Cabo Pantoja to Iquitos. This totals $1175 USD, plus a total of $65 USD for the Observation Tower, Clay Lick, the lagoon, and dolphin watching (these were not included in the price and were not communicated beforehand). In total, $1240 USD for a 3.5-day guided tour, plus administrative costs for the pre-organization of days 4-6. Personally, I think that's too high a price. Especially since it was a very basic trip and not a tour in one of the luxurious eco-lodges (which I appreciate; this is simply a matter of assessing the value for money).
On the other hand, it was a very remote area (primarily due to logistical challenges), and the tour was essentially organized for me alone.
Conclusion:
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and the activities up to day 4. I felt comfortable and well looked after by the guide and accompanying person throughout. As a solo traveler who doesn't speak Spanish, you should just be aware of the schedule for the last 2.5 days.
Personally, I also think that the service provided is not entirely disproportionate to the price paid. However, this is only a personal opinion.
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize once again that I am reporting solely on my own experiences, and that the activities and the areas visited were generally very beautiful, and the staff very friendly.
Overall, it was an adventurous experience that, despite the points mentioned, I wouldn't want to have missed in retrospect.
I would give it 3.5/5 stars if that were possible.
