点评:Monumental statues of Garibaldi and/or King Vittorio Emanuele II pop up everywhere, all over the place in Italy.
This large bronze in the centre of Fiesole shows the two of them together, both on horseback.
It recreates a defining moment in Italian history, known as ‘the Encounter at Teano’. Following Garibaldi’s defeat of the southern states in 1860, he meets with Vittorio Emmanuel, shakes his hand and addresses him as the King of Italy.
Garibaldi is effectively handing over control of the conquered territories to the Victor Emmanuele and acknowledging him as the first king of a newly united Italy. King.
In real life, the two men were ideologically opposed but both were patriots who wanted unification above anything else.
As the first king, Vittorio Emanuele II is remembered as ‘Father of the Fatherland’.
In truth, the creation of a unified Italy was probably due more to the diplomatic talents and political mastery of Cavour and the strategic skills and guerillla tactics of Garibaldi and his Red Shirts.
The monument was created in 1906 by Oreste Calzolari
Whilst you might not go out of your way just to see a statue, this one is hard to miss. It’s in Piazza Mino, the main square in Fiesole where most of the town’s restaurants, cafes and gelato shops are clustered. It’s also where the bus from Florence arrives and departs so its one of the first things that most tourists see when they arrive in Fiesole.
