点评:Don’t expect stalls and traders, artisans or art and craft. This is not really a market in the usual sense. It’s more like a shopping arcade.
Whilst the market building is historic, the market inside is a jumble of some interesting shops and some tacky. On the plus side, there are no chain shops, they are all independent shops but overall, its more tacky than interesting.
One real gem is Jane’s Espresso Bar which served excellent Turkish coffee and Turkish delight. We sat on a bar stool at the counter and he explained carefully how authentic Turkish coffee should be made and how to drink it. We really enjoyed this and went back the next day.
Another gem is Skoobs, a second-hand bookshop. The books are so well organised, it’s almost like browsing in Waterstones and if you’re looking for a well-known author, he is likely to have the full collection of every book they’ve written. If like me, you have a weakness for crime, then you will be spoilt for choice. The prices are reasonable for second-hand (not as cheap as a charity store but still good value) and they are all in good condition.
We also stopped at the Guildhall Deli where you can pick up local snacks like Scotch eggs.
A small point of interest is the market pillar - an historical curiosity. It’s a short, squat, carved stone block and you can very easily walk past without noticing it, but this is where trading, deals and payments took place in the early days.
It is worth noting that the market is completely undercover and centrally located (very close to the Abbey) so it’s a good thing to keep in mind for a rainy day.
Jane’s Espresso Bar
