点评:A hard slog but worth it. As others have described it's virtually a continuous staircase of around 1250 steps, but these are rough and variable steps. Occasional stretches are particularly uneven and as someone with a few years experience of life I found sticks particularly helpful, especially on the descent. I would certainly take the DOC rating of 'easy' with a pinch of salt, it's certainly not a stroll.
You do get glimpses of the view as you ascend, but it is mainly obscured by vegetation. However, the view at the top is grand and there is a bench for you to sit on and take it all in - a good time to enjoy any snack you may have brought with you.
We took the brochure's advice to go up there at sunset in the summer and we were rewarded with a very clear evening to see the snow in Mount Cook turn orange. It was actually TOO clear for a dramatic sunset but we are just grateful we could see Mount Cook at all, it's certainly not guaranteed. A torch was a necessity for the descent at that time of course, but in any event it is something, along with water and suitable clothing, that you should always have with you here as a precaution.
