Beautiful, unique chapel!
红岩圣十字教堂的点评
点评：What a beautiful architectural structure and story of its founder. One of the most unique chapels I ever visited. It is small but simply beautiful. Built in 1957 in a contemporary, unique way then donated to the Catholic Church. Very difficult to construct. The Monday evening Taize service is wonderful. No admission to visit, but you may make a donation. There is a spot near the alter where the beautiful Jesus on the cross appears to look down into your eyes. The original crucifix was modern and not liked by most and removed after donors death. There was no cross in the chapel for perhaps 30 years? A local sculptor created a new huge crucifix who’s beautiful and lifelike. There is a nice gift shop in the basement. I spent about an hour outside and inside. The crowds can be overwhelming. The parking area fills up early and stays full all day. There is a narrow 2 way road with angled parking that meanders up the hill to the base of the chapel. My first visit was stuck in traffic for 30 minutes with cars waiting for parking spaces. I gave up and left and returned the following day before opening at 9 am. Parking filled up quickly. After parking it is a steep short or long walk up to the chapel. Docents were friendly and full of information. After touring the chapel I hiked the 4 mile trail that circled the twin buttes behind the chapel. The trail was great with views but moderate difficulty. Hikers may not park at the chapel so I parked at the trailhead downhill and several hundred yards from the chapel.
