点评:Mtskheta Church of the Holy Cross is across the river from the city of Mtskheta, but is a drive of several miles. This UNESCO World Heritage is a major tourist attraction and a short drive from Tbilisi so expect crowds. Built initially in the 6th Century this has been a site of pilgrimage for many centuries. This was the first church in Georgia where reliefs were used to decorate the facades of the building, which are now typical of the area.
The church is built on the site where St Nino erected a large wooden cross in the 4th Cebntiruy The octagonal stone base of the cross is preserved in the centre of the church. There is scaffolding in position to protect the bus, ding and visitors but the atmpsohrtr remained peaceful and holy. There are a few icons to see in the dark ibnteropr . Also on the site are second chapel from the 6th Century, a hermits cell and extensive large fortification walls. Long ranging views over the mountains, river and city of Mtskheta.
Free to enter but donations encouraged. Parking just below the church which is then reached by an eleven steep path.
