点评:Walking down Ulica Grodzka towards the beautiful Wawel Castle/Cathedral I passed this simple cross located outside the lovely Church Of St Giles.
This cross is in remembrance of an atrocity that occurred during World War Two, with the fate of Poland sealed with its close proximity to both Russia and Germany ,with the country overrun and many Polish P.O.W's took prisoner by both Germany and Russia ,the Polish officers were separated from the low ranked soldiers and were systematically murdered in the forests of Katyn which is 20 kilometres from Smolensk by the Peoples Comissariat Internal Affairs ( N.K.V.D. ) ,some 22.000 Polish officers were slain in the forests of Katyn by the Soviets ,the forests became known as " forest of nightmares " ,the Soviets denied this barbaric act until 2010 when they finally acknowledged this act of evil was undertook on the orders of Stalin and his equally evil subordinates, the cross reminds us of the horrors of war and is well worth a few minutes of your time if you're walking down Ulica Grodzka.
