点评:This is a good starting point for exploring the historic centre of the small but very lovely, hilltop town of Loro Piceno. The arch is located in the main square below the town and is basically the gateway to the old town.
It’s freestanding, making it more like an honorary arch than an historic gateway. It’s relatively new, having only been built in 1847.
It replaced a much older medieval gateway, the Porta di San Benedetto, which sadly, was demolished. At the time it would have seemed a good idea as the ancient gate was too small to accommodate ‘modern’ transport like wagons.
Overall the arch is quite plain and there is very little in the way of decoration other than a religious crest honouring Pope Pius IX. The arch was dedicated to him on 8th November, 1847. There’s also a white plaque but it’s also positioned very high up and it’s impossible to read it.
MONDAY MARKET: We visited on a Monday, which is Loro Piceno’s weekly market. The market stalls, which are a mix of food, fruit & veg and clothing are set up in the piazza in front of the arch.
PARKING: We found free parking on the road that runs alongside the arch.
