点评:May I start by saying that under ideal circumstances this would be an expensive but enjoyable trip. This trip was Oct 2926. I also acknowledge that the weather is uncontrollable as is the peak of the fall foliage season.
That being said I feel that this was a horrible trip due to the unpreparedness of the staff. Instructions at online pre-purchase of tickets states to pickup a paper boarding pass at “will call”. There is no “will call” window. There is a crowd of people trying form a line to get to the “ticket window” to get there pass. Once they get there pass there is another line that is not discernible from the first line that is the boarding line. They run adjacent to each other and slowly word leaks out that this is the case. Too bad for the people that waited in the wrong line. There are no ropes or directional signs to assist. Staff does not come outside to tell any one of this or offer verbal direction.
There is no food allowed on the train. Once we were able to board the train an announcement was made over speaker that a pre-ordered lunch can be picked up in the snack/bar car. Making a trip to the restroom and a side trip to the snack car, located in same car, is a test of patience and endurance. Only to be told, when you arrive at the front of the line to pickup your lunch, that they forgot to load the lunches at the embarkation station. This could have at least been announced over the speaker system. Passengers seated at tables in the dining car had to also endure the constant jostling of all the passengers trying to get to restrooms and the snack bar.
We had seats in the dome car. As posted in the ticket pricing these seats are twice the cost of standard seating. What we paid for was a car that had no heat and in fact the air conditioning was turned on several times. The temperature outside was in the low 40’s and inside the dome a chilly 63 degrees while standard cars were in the 70’s. (I have pictures, you can’t make this stuff up). As said earlier it was raining and the dome windows were streaming water into the cabin. Maintenance was prepared with a roll of duct tape within easy reach. (I have pictures) They taped windows more than once. Paper towels were issued to try and clear windows.
Now I understand that things can happen on an old train. However this is their peak season. It is a very short season and not their first season. I would think that they would have the system refined to the point of mitigating these problems. Just as they had duct tape handy, although primitive as that is, they were ill prepared at best. No compensation was offered for our inconvenience or discomfort beyond having to ask for a refund for a lunch not delivered. This can happen to you and I can’t recommend a roll of the dice to make this trip. A simple drive to Crawford Notch and return would have been easier and cheaper.
