点评:The recent Wave The Waders Goodbye course at the Broome Bird Observatory was a wonderful experience.
There were thousands of birds on the tidal mudflats and high tide roosting sites of Roebuck Bay in breeding plumage awaiting their turn to migrate north for the northern summer. Watching the curlews and sand plovers gather in formation on the mudflats in the late afternoon on Migration Watch and lifting off over the mangroves and flying over us heading north was a surprisingly emotional experience knowing these little birds have thousands of kilometres to fly.
The guides (Wardens Jamie and Sebastian) of the Broome Bird Observatory and their volunteer assistants are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and do everything possible to make the experience enjoyable. The meals (become a stage five plump great knot) and accomodation are excellent and with the new four wheel drive van the tours are much more comfortable.
But in the end it’s all about these extraordinary birds and hearing about their interesting lives and ongoing research from the expert speakers.
A visit to BBO is highly recommended with grateful thanks to everyone at BBO.
