点评:We visited the Dachstein Ice Cave on August 8, 2023. And we hate to say this, but it was a huge disappointment.
We caught Hallstatt bus #543 to the town of Obertraun. The final bus stop was the Krippenstein 3-stage cable car for the Dachstein Ice Cave tour & the 5Fingers viewpoint. You get off at the first stage for the caves, and have to sign up there for a 50-minute cave tour. We got on a tour right away but it’s a steady uphill walk to the cave entrance, which was clearly difficult for some of the people we saw.
Once inside the mountain you walk 15 minutes seeing no ice, then through a door, past some ice flows and a few minor formations before reaching a 10’ thumb of ice. Based on online pix it doesn’t seem to change much year to year. As you get closer, swirling colored lights appear along with overly-loud, ponderous music. This happens again when you reach the second formation, bigger and viewed from a little bridge, this time accompanied by loud Bach organ music. Then up a short flight of stairs to an exit door and the tour is over.
It seems to us that whoever operates these caves knows they haven’t got much to show and need the dramatic lights and loud music to make visitors feel their entrance fee was well-spent. We’ve seen photo-collage advertisements for the tour that are exaggerations (if not outright fakery), making it seem like the cave has more ice formations than it does. And although a life-size bear animatronic adds a fun touch at the start of the tour (apparently a bear fossil was discovered in the cave) one ad shows it looming over the tour like a 50’ giant. The intent is to attract paying visitors, like most ads. But over-hyping the experience can lead to expectations that can’t be met and the result is disappointment.
That was our case, two adults traveling with no kids. On the other hand, kids who have never been inside a mountain or seen an ice formation will probably enjoy this visit. And parents who enjoy seeing their kids have fun will probably like the tour for that reason.
The tour guide said there were 500 steps on the tour, but none were especially difficult.
We did not find any part of the tour claustrophobic either.
The inside temp is 27° F.
There was also a piano in the cave and we were told they have concerts here due to the excellent acoustics.
After the cave tour we got back onto the cable car and went up to the second stop to walk to the 5Fingers lookout. We have also posted a review for that.
You can also take a boat from Hallstatt to Obertraun. I had read that the bus was the only direct route to the cable-car station and if you took the boat to Obertraun you’d have to figure out how to get there from the dock. The bus actually made several stops in Obertraun town before ending up at the cable car station, so it seems one could arrive by boat and simply walk to the nearest bus stop. The boat would certainly be more scenic than the bus ride.
