点评:The Stalin Museum was opened in 1957, when the Soviet Union was still firmly in the grip of communism. It seems the museum is still locked in 1957.
It is indeed a fascinating museum. A fabulous collection of photographs, letters, documents, art works and sycophantic gifts from foreign heads of state. With Georgian and English (very basic) interpretation boards, and many of the exhibits in Russian, the collection is indeed a celebration of Stalin's life and achievements. But maybe seen as a favourite son from Gori, a loving appreciation of a local boy made good.
There is only a slight hint to his despotic behaviours in a standalone ground floor exhibition. The main, impressive upstairs halls don't really touch on the atrocities, the executions of political opposition, the purges of the Red Army, the Ukrainian famines, et al. Nothing really about the descent of the Iron Curtain and the subjugation of Eastern Europe.
There is a gift shop, selling a wide selection of Stalin themed goods. T-shirts, mugs, wine etc, all paying homage to the great man.
Outside a railway carriage used to travel to the Yalta conference, as an exhibit on its own, a fascinating time capsule. Maybe to be compared with the bullet ridden cattle truck in the Museum of Soviet Occupation in Tbilisi for a balanced view on differing modes of rail travel; one side luxury, the other mass murder. Then reconsider if those mugs or t-shirts are really quite so cool?
Entry is 15 Gel for an adult.
Car parking is available just over the road to the north side of the museum, 3 Gel handed to an attendant. Capitalism is alive and kicking!
Recommended as a place to visit. Just remember those rose-tinted spectacles.
