点评:After lunch at Jackson Harbor Soup, we literally walked across the parking lot and discovered the Jackson Harbor Maritime Museum — and I’m so glad we stopped!
The museum was established in 1978 and is housed in some of the original buildings once used by Washington Island’s fishing community. It’s small, but there’s a surprising amount of local history packed inside, with exhibits about commercial fishing, the ferry and the Coast Guard’s presence on the island.
What really made our visit special was chatting with one of the volunteers, whose family has deep roots on Washington Island. He shared stories about the early fishing community, including how they harvested and used ice — something we never would have learned just walking through on our own. He was fascinating to listen to and really brought the island’s history to life.
There’s no admission charge, although donations are appreciated, so we were happy to leave one. You probably only need 20–30 minutes, but it’s absolutely worth stopping in — especially if you’re already having lunch next door at Jackson Harbor Soup. A wonderful little glimpse into the history of Washington Island! ❤️
