点评:You'd be surprised to know that half of my lasting memories are of just getting here. Once you board your ferry from the new Jesselton, keep your phone on record and observe what happens. Oh, and hold your phone and children tightly.
After the screaming engines, jumping and landing on the rough waves, you finally come to a stop—then you can breathe again and thank your higher power you made it. Thrilling? Yes. Expected? No. So be aware.
We went on a Wednesday, so the crowds were manageable—not packed at all. I was considering which islands I'd like for my family of two children, ages 4 and 6. Research told me Manukan and Sapi. If I were you, I'd stay at Manukan. It has everything you need.
Reasons why we loved Manukan:
Sea shells: My kids love this more than anything. Collecting them was fun—the surf banks onto the beach in a rough way, which makes it tricky but adds to the adventure.
Tide: The surf is a bit rough, but nothing earth-shattering. Perfect for 4–6-year-olds. Kids under 4 will definitely need help.
Beach & Space: While there's not a ton of beach and sand compared to US or Thai beaches, there's more here than the other islands in the marine park. Accessible, with free seating and—my favorite—SHADE!
Food options: There's a markup, sure—but do you have a choice? Bring your own if you want to save.
Extras: Signs, billboards, island vibes, photo ops galore, WWII relics, and the famous "I Love Manukan" sign.
Life vests: If you want to swim, you must wear one. Perfect for my kids, not so perfect for adults.
Fish: The other islands have fish too, but the water and surf here make it harder to see them. It's best here at Manukan.
Lifeguards: Dedicated lifeguards on the bullhorn ensuring everyone's safety—a nice touch that gave us peace of mind.
And the price? Relatively cheap by western standards—especially when you consider the experience and the memories you'll take home.
If I were you—and you have small children—just spend the day here and thank me later. 🏝️
