点评:Cross the bridge that spans the Ohio River from Illinois to Kentucky on I-24 and stop at the Whitehaven Welcome Center at 1845 Lone Oak Road in Paducah. I've never seen a welcome center in any state that compares to it. Built in 1865, it is a historic plantation house that has been used as the Kentucky welcome center since 1983. It is the only historic house in the United States also used as a rest area. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, it originally was a simple two-story, brick farmhouse but was remodeled in the Classical Revival style in 1903. The renovation included a grand staircase, 22 rooms, elaborate plaster ceilings with crown molding, a large portico with eight Corinthian columns and a name, Whitehaven, to match the new white paint job. The house fell into disrepair in the 1970s and faced demolition but Governor John Y. Brown Jr. and Secretary of Transportation Frank Metts decided that the house could serve as the I-24 welcome center with restrooms, information desk and storage area. Three outbuildings were saved and repurposed -- the gazebo,a storm shelter and carriage house. Part of the second floor of the house was devoted to displaying memorabilia of Vice President Alben Barkley, a lawyer and politician from Kentucky who served from 1949 to 1953 under President Harry Truman.
