点评：A magnificent Edwardian theatre – and a masterpiece of Frank Matcham
His Majesty’s Theatre is one of Britain’s finest surviving Edwardian theatres and is well worth visiting, whether you’re attending a performance or simply have an interest in architecture and theatre history.
Designed by the celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham and opened in 1906, the theatre combines a striking granite exterior with an elegant and richly decorated auditorium. The proportions, sightlines and acoustics demonstrate why Matcham is still regarded as one of the greatest theatre architects of his era.
The theatre has been sympathetically cared for over more than a century and continues to present an impressive programme of musicals, drama, ballet, opera and concerts. If you have the opportunity, arrive early to admire the foyer and auditorium before the performance begins.
During my visit I was particularly pleased to see the theatre celebrating its architectural heritage, including the recently unveiled plaque commemorating Frank Matcham’s contribution. It is encouraging to see such an important historic theatre continuing to be appreciated by new generations.
