Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge的点评
点评：Great park for 3 mile hiking routes or even longer bike rides. There’s over 60 miles of trails available. However, don’t expect much for car touring, Buena Vista on your way into the visitor center and Lakeside on the way to Osprey Overlook (new boardwalk) and Gator Pond are the only places your car can go. Don’t miss Gator Pond. It’s just a short walk for a lot of wildlife.
There is NO tram nor vehicle access to Bayside/Steve Thompson Wildlife Loop. It is a great bicycle ride though. Besides Steve Thompson and Gator Pond, I recommend Island Fields. 2 miles out and 2 miles back. Do as much or as little as you want. There are many ponds along the way that contain wildlife when the other ponds throughout the park are receding.
The visitor center staff is very knowledgeable about where to go and what to see. And they have resource books if you need to confirm a new “life bird.” They feed birds twice a day at 4 feeding stations around the visitor center. They just built a new bird blind.
They do not have a store so bring your hat and water bottle. They have the cleanest restrooms of any wildlife refuge. You may pay your entrance fee in the visitor center, cash preferred. You don’t have to do it ahead of time.
