点评:For Civil War buffs, like me, the Carter House is a centerpiece of the Battle of Franklin, which was fought on November 30, 1864, and played a major role in the outcome of the fighting in Tennessee and Georgia and the outcome of the war. Located at 1140 Columbia Avenue, the Federal style brick farm house was built in 1830. It was accompanied by several outbuildings, including a farm office, smokehouse and kitchen. In the 1850s, the Carter family built a cotton gin on the property that became a much-remembered landmark during the battle. The cotton gin no longer stands but the house and three other buildings remain and illustrate the horror of the conflict with over a thousand bullet holes still visible. During the battle, the Carter family took refuge in the basement. Tod Carter, the middle son, a member of the 20th Tennessee Infantry, was mortally wounded in the battle and was brought to the house. He lived for several hours, surrounded by his distraught family, but died of his wounds on December 2 and was buried in Rest Haven Cemetery, north of town. Today, the room where he died is one of the highlights of the guided tour of the home. Listed as a State Historic Site, the Carter House was designated as a contributing part of the U.S. National Historic Landmark District in 1960.
