One of the Best Scenic Drives in the NPS

点评：This road is consistently listed in the top 20 scenic drives within the NPS. It is a beautiful drive that takes you from the volcanoes of the park to the ocean. One of the things you don't immediately get when you are at Kilauea is its elevation, but the crater is almost 4,000 feet above sea level. However, at the crater, the jungle vegetation and gradual slope mean you don't notice the elevation.
The road connects a series of craters that have served as past eruption sites over the last 70 years. However, it is not until you pass the craters and the vegetation that surrounds them that you come to the lava flows and see the most amazing vistas in the park. Here you realize the scenic beauty that makes this a top drive in the NPS, and it continues all the way down to the ocean.
I strongly encourage you to make the entire drive to the ocean as it is a different but equally beautiful drive all the way to the ocean. The second reason is to see the Holei Sea Arch which is a short hike from the oceanfront terminus of the road. The road originally made a circle to exit the park and return you to the main road to Hilo and the airport. However, in 1983, Pu'U'O'O crater erupted and flowed lava to the sea and covered the road.
The day we visited there was continuous series of clouds and rain rolling in from the ocean that made the scenery even better and producing rainbows. However, rain or shine this is a beautiful drive that reminds you America's National Parks are some of the most beautiful places on earth. Here is one of those places that you can drive to see.
