The home of 'the first American interior designer' - pastiche, hodgepodge, delight (?)
Beauport, the Sleeper-McCann House的点评
点评:You are here for the story and the interior. The story belongs to a certain class, a certain time, and a certain set. The McCanns were the preservationists, Sleeper was the designer who built this personal showroom, and lived fabulously in it - in the manner of one does with friends like Isabella Stewart Gardner and their common link A. Piatt Andrew. The interior was carefully curated, although whether it 'works' today depends on how one feels about clutter and light. This shows best on a brilliantly sunny day, and even then some rooms feel a little dark (almost cramped sometimes in such a large structure, but that a function of tour group size - this place was meant to be lived in. One particularly bright airy, room is ready for a photo shoot in 2026 and certainly still influences anyone who aspires to the 'New England casual beach money' look - Martha Stewart is a major fan. Great views of Gloucester Harbor - the surrounding neighborhood itself is worth a drive around. The effect of all is calculated indolent rich - dropping notes to one another about gardens or hats / except that there was a lot effort expended to create the effect. Widely regarded as one of the most published houses in America, HF Dupont (the Winterthur DuPont) personally commended the estate after Sleeper's death to the McCanns as worth preserving in toto such was its significance
