点评:This is one of 3 National Historic Sites on the Big Island of Hawaii. A heiau is an Hawaiian native temple sight with a man-made level space dedicated to a specific purpose. Pu'ukohola is significant in that it was build and dedicated by Kamehameha. In the midst of the unification effort, Kamehameha was having mixed results including a conflict on the Big Island of Hawaii with his cousin Keoua. A local priest suggested he build a luakini heiau (sacrificial temple). Within one year, Kamehameha had a temple build by hand transporting red temple stone 14 miles by human chain. Here Keoua submitted defeat to Kamehameha after the Battle of Hilo, and he was sacrificed by Kamehameha for success in the upcoming battles for Maui and Oahu.
The location is a beautiful hill overlooking a bend in the shore. The name means "hill of the whale", and I can confirm on our sailing trip 3 days before we saw whales breeching just offshore from this bend in the shore. The location is so pretty that Kamehameha's British advisor John Young built his house here in this bend after the war for unification was completed.
My son and I visited the park and enjoyed seeing the site. While the site has a gruesome origin, it is important to Hawaiian history and culture and thus worth the visit.
