点评:What a perfect hidden treasure in the middle of a historic district overflowing with great sites!
Touted as the "second most haunted site" in Virginia, we didn't see any spirits or hear any odd noises (they say thunderstorms help on those). But we saw one of the most interesting museums in the area. The Exchange Hotel has three very well appointed floors with rooms that amply trace the place's antebellum, Civil War, and post-war history as a railway tavern/ticket office, a heavily uses receiving hospital, a focal point for Confederate logistical and intelligence operations in the area, a Freeman's Bureau headquarters, and a luxury hotel right off the busy railway just across the front lawn. The snapshot of late 19th century American traveling life alone is fascinating, a dollar a day for a terrific room and another dollar and a half for three meals in the dining room below. Wonderful stuff. Tickets were $14 per person for adults.
Plan your visit around 10:30 am and head over afterwards for lunch at the fantastic Exchange BBQ across the street.
Note: A pet peeve for a frequent museum visitor (with a PhD in Communication) is the prohibition against interior photos by tourists, an outdated and useless precaution that limits free publicity in the era of social media, when your visitors can afford you fantastic word-of-mouth exposure. If any museum board members read this, please consider revising that restriction. It really doesn't do such a terrific place any favors. I think folks fear the use of flash, but just say so. It's all that's needed. The ISOs on smartphones are now good enough for flash to occur to almost no one these days.
