点评:My husband and I visited the McNay Art Museum the afternoon of 8/13 specifically to take a photo with the Robert Indiana LOVE sculpture, which holds a very special place in our hearts. My husband proposed to me in front of a LOVE sculpture in Arkansas years ago, and since then, we have made it a tradition to visit other LOVE sculptures whenever we find them and take a picture together. We have quite a collection now, so being able to add the McNay’s to our collection was something we were genuinely excited about.
2 women nearby were kind enough to take our photo. I stepped over what appeared to be a low railing so I could stand beside the sculpture and knowing not to touch anything, but not realizing that I was somewhere I should not have been. Suddenly, there was very loud startling banging on the glass, and I looked up to see a man inside aggressively pounding while motioning for me to move away from the sculpture. I was embarrassed, particularly because the person outside, my husband and the person taking our photo were all caught off guard by the interaction.
I completely understand the importance of protecting the artwork, and I sincerely apologize for not realizing that I had crossed a boundary. The other LOVE sculptures we have visited have not had the same type of barrier surrounding them, no signage was there that I saw so it simply wasn’t obvious to me that I was in an area I shouldn’t have entered. Lesson learned and I accept full responsibility.
That said as we focus on guest interaction, I do wish the situation had been handled differently. The doors were very close to where the glass was being struck. Stepping out with a simple, “Ma’am, please step outside of the barrier,” would have communicated the same message without the startling and embarrassing experience of someone pounding aggressively on the glass.
I’m sharing this in hopes that this can be a learning opportunity for both visitors and staff. Perhaps clearer signage around outdoor installations could help visitors understand where they may and may not stand, and a kind verbal reminder would go a long way when someone is simply unaware.
We love the tradition behind these sculptures and were disappointed that what should have been a sweet addition to our collection ended so awkwardly. Needless to say, we bypassed touring the rest of the museum.
