Most Populated and Visited Island but Plenty of Nature and Wildlife

点评：Isla Santa Cruz is probably the most visited on all the islands in the Galapagos in part because the main airport of entry in located here at Baltra. It is also the most populated and has the largest city in the Galapagos at Puerto Ayora. However, it is still very much worth spending time here as there is plenty of nature and wildlife to be found and the island has some wonderful things to see and experience. Tortuga Bay Beach is a mile long spectacular white sandy beach. Despite it being accessible from Puerto Ayora by water taxi or by a 45 minute hike, it remains somewhat isolated and not overly busy. Many marine iguanas can be found along the beach and there is good snorkeling at the section of the beach known as Playa Mansa. The Highlands region features several giant tortoise reserves and tours can be arranged allowing for an informative and fascinating visit. The Charles Darwin Research Center is also found on the island. I took an excellent snorkeling tour with Guiding Galapagos Tours to nearby Pinzon Island but we also stopped at Palmitas Bay on the west side of Isla Santa Cruz. The snorkeling here was terrific with many tropical fish and several up close encounters with sea turtles. The town of Puerto Ayora gives you the best selection of restaurants in the Galapagos. The Point Restaurant that can only be reached by water taxi from the ferry pier was wonderful. The town also provides many bars and a bit of nightlife compared to the other islands visited. Santa Cruz Brewery, El Jardin Restaurant and the Golden Prague Pub are good examples.
