点评:This is an historic park with many elements dating back centuries, although it has been in its present form since the mid-1800s. The moat at the eastern and southern edges of the park, however, dates all the way back to 1370 and was part of Celle's early city fortifications. I was lucky enough to see a swan swimming along this moat at twilight. So peaceful!
Although originally a French garden in the early 17th Century, the Französischer Garten has, ironically, been an English landscape park since the late 18th Century. There is a beautiful circular pond with fountain at the east end of the park. Running along the east-west axis is an avenue featuring 4 rows of linden trees (224 in total), which were planted between 1951 - 1953.
There are many points of interest in the park. Near the east entrance is a memorial to the Danish queen Caroline Mathilda, who was exiled to Celle Castle in 1772. The Celle poet Ernst Schulze (1789 - 1817) has a bust with a plaque on a marble column in the center of the Baroque rose garden just north of the pond at the eastern edge of the park. There is also a memorial to those who fought in the Battle of Langensalza (June 27, 1866) during the Austro-Prussian War. Finally, there is an art piece by Timm Ulrichs of a giant-sized flowerpot constructed around a large tree.
I recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the park just before dusk. It is very tranquil and serene.
