A Fantastic Historic Stop! Helpful Tips for Visitors
Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park的点评
点评:Not to be confused with the park's second location (the Boyhood Home at Knob Creek), this memorial site commemorates the actual Sinking Spring farm where Abraham Lincoln was born in a one-room log cabin on February 12, 1809. It is a beautifully preserved piece of history that is well worth a visit!
We spent about an hour here and started at the Visitor Center (open 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM). It features excellent indoor exhibits and a theater showing a great 15-minute film about Lincoln's early childhood in Kentucky. If you collect national park stamps, don't forget to grab the special edition America250 cancellation stamp for our Passport book here!
Outside, the highlight is the grand memorial building. Be prepared to climb 56 stone steps to reach the top, one step for each year of Lincoln's life. Inside sites a reconstructed Symbolic Cabin representing his birthplace.
After checking out the cabin, I hiked the 0.3-mile Boundary Oak Trail. It's a moderate quick walk, though the famous old white oak tree that once marked the property line died in 1976 and was removed in 1986 (so don't spend time hunting for it!). My final stop was the actual Sinking Spring. It is incredibly neat to look down into the cool water source the Lincoln family used daily and see exactly where the farm got its name.
