Disappointing wines and an uncomfortable tasting experience

点评：We visited this winery after spending the afternoon before in Montalcino town tasting nearly a dozen Brunellos from different producers at one of the large enotecas with self-service tasting machines. That had given us a very useful introduction to Brunello and the various styles.
Unfortunately, the wines here were among the weakest we tasted in Montalcino. Compared with almost every Brunello we had tried the day before, they seemed largely devoid of Sangiovese fruit. There was very little cherry, plum, or darker fruit character. Instead, several wines showed considerable oak sweetness, relatively poor acidity, and an impression of sweetness on the palate without much fruit underneath. A couple were among the poorest wines we tasted during the whole trip.
The tasting itself was also disappointing. One of the daughters, who is involved in the winemaking, gave a rehearsed explanation of 30 seconds for each wine and then walked away. At one point, when she asked what we thought, we simply said that we were trying to understand the style because we were not getting much Sangiovese fruit. That was the entire observation, with no judgment about quality.
Her response was strange. She immediately became defensive and launched into a long tirade about her mother’s struggles and the effort involved in building the estate. She seemed angry. What was a simple observation about the wines triggered a very uncomfortable tirade.
Between wines that lacked fruit and acidity, the poor hospitality at the tasting, and the very defensive reaction to a straightforward comment about style, this was one of the least enjoyable winery visits of our trip.
