点评:The Cascade Canyon Trail is one of the most popular and best-known hikes in Grand Teton National Park. To access the trail, take Teton Park Road, turn at the Jenny Lake exit and then find an open space in the parking lot. My wife and I hiked this trail on a chilly (48⁰F/9⁰C) and very rainy day in mid-September 2022.
There are two different ways you can take on the Cascade Canyon Trail. If you take the longer route via the Jenny Lake Loop Trail, it’s a 14.6 mi/23.5 km round-trip. If you take the boat shuttle across Jenny Lake (you can buy tickets at the boat dock), the hike is 8.8 mi/14.2 km round trip from the West Boat Dock at Jenny Lake. Whichever route you take, it’s an out-and-back hike. We went for the latter option, even though the boat ride magnified the rain and cold.
From the West Boat Dock of Jenny Lake, follow the well-maintained trail through a conifer forest with several scenic points along the way. After a little over 0.5 mi/0.8 km, just before you cross a small bridge, take the short, unmarked spur trail and get a great view of Hidden Falls. After you cross the bridge back on the main trail, the trail becomes rockier as you approach Inspiration Point. NOTE that just before Inspiration Point, you’ll come to a ledge that’s carved out of the granite rock. Watch your step along this exposed stretch as it can be very slippery, especially in the rain.
At the 1.1 mi/1.8 km mark, you’ll reach Inspiration Point, which is known for its stunning views of Jenny Lake, Mount Owen and the Grand Teton (unfortunately, due to the weather, we couldn’t see any mountains). Most people stop and turn around at this point, but we continued on into Cascade Canyon as the trail transitioned into a dirt track (not the best hiking surface on a rainy day). After slogging through the mud for about 0.5 mi/0.8 km, we were stopped in our tracks as we approached a large meadow. It wasn’t because trail was washed out; it was because there were two huge bull moose lounging on the trail! After admiring them from the proper distance and snapping a few photos, we took this interruption as our sign to turn around.
NOTE that one woman was determined to continue her hike and passed within 2 yd/1.8 m of the moose. This was extremely foolish, as moose are known to be quite ornery and aggressive when provoked. You should maintain a 25 yd/22.8 m distance from a moose in the wild.
All through this hike we muttered about how cold and soaked we were becoming, but after our up-close experience with the moose we agreed that this was one of the most memorable and worthwhile hikes we have ever taken.
