点评:Belle Meade Plantation, now officially titled Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery, is a historic farm established in 1807 that was built, owned and controlled by five generations of the Harding-Jackson family for nearly a century. Located at 5025 Harding Pike in Nashville, Tennessee, near the Natchez Trace, it once was one of the grandest estates in the South and has been converted into a showplace. At one time, it grew to cover 5,400 acres and used a labor force of 136 enslaved workers. The centerpiece is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1853. Today, the historic site is operated as a tourist attraction, museum, non-profit winery and onsite restaurant. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it has several original buildings on the remaining 30 acres of property, including a dairy, gardener's house, carriage house, stable, mausoleum and the original 1790s Harding log cabin. Start at the Visitors' Center, which was constructed in 1990 to serve as the central point for guests to arrive. It also serves as a gift shop. In 2009, Belle Meade opened Nashville's first winery featuring Tennessee red and white wines made from the native southern grape, the muscadine and blackberry fruit. The onsite restaurant, the Belle Meade Meat and Three, offers smoked meats, fresh cooked vegetables, biscuits, cornbread and home-made desserts. In 1853, the house was altered by applying stucco to cover the red bricks and a two-story veranda was created on the central block, featuring six solid limestone pillars quarried at Belle Meade and styled in the Doric order. A two-story kitchen extension was added to the house via a two-level breezeway. In the interior, a 14 feet high central Entrance Hall runs the full length of the house from west to east. The walls display thoroughbred horse paintings by 19th century painters that depict some of the most famous horses. On the north end of the hall, double parlors feature wood of the tulip poplar, Tennessee's state tree. The library and dining rooms are found to the south, featuring portraits of the Harding family and chandeliers that once were lit with methane gas. The second and third floors are accessed by a winding, cantilevered Second Empire-style staircase carved from cherry. The second floor contains two connected bedrooms to the north and a guest bedroom and master bedroom to the south. In 1883, the interior was modernized by adding three full bathrooms complete with hot and cold running water. The mansion also has a cellar, uncommon at the time, containing a steam engine and a boiler to power the hot and cold running water in the house. Belle Meade is Nashville's answer to Stanton Hall in Natchez, Mississippi.
