点评:I am writing this review to stand in support of a family whose experience involving a Darien Library employee was heartbreaking and completely unacceptable. During a children’s event, a woman named Erica was interacting with the children using a puppet while reading/performing a book. She engaged with multiple white children, allowing them to interact with and pet the puppet. Meanwhile, a much younger Black little boy repeatedly tried to get her attention because he wanted to do exactly what the other children were being allowed to do — pet the puppet and participate. He was ignored. What made it even more disturbing was watching him continue trying while she continued interacting with other children. Other parents apparently noticed what was happening as well, yet no one stepped in or attempted to get her attention on his behalf. Thankfully, his family remained composed. They didn’t cause a scene. They simply observed and recorded what was happening. Whatever Erica’s intent may have been, the difference in how this Black child was treated compared with the other children was painful to watch and deserves to be addressed. When you choose to work with children, every child deserves to feel welcomed, included, and valued. There should NEVER be a situation where a child is left reaching for the same interaction being freely given to the children around him. The saddest part is that this baby was too young to understand why he wasn’t getting the same attention. He couldn’t ask, “Why won’t she play with me?” or understand why he wasn’t getting a turn. All he knew was that he wanted to pet the puppet too. Children notice how adults treat them long before they have the words to describe it. I hate that this family experienced this, and I hate that this little boy was excluded from an experience that should have been joyful and welcoming. I sincerely hope Darien Library takes this family’s concerns seriously, reviews what happened, and ensures that every person representing the library in children’s programming understands that ALL children deserve the same kindness, engagement, and opportunity to participate. If you work with children, loving, respecting, and including ALL children is not optional.
