点评:We went on a warm afternoon, which I wouldn’t recommend doing if you want to walk extensively around the grounds. We watched the 20-minute movie, which gave a good background about John Muir and his family. Then Park Ranger Wendy gave us about a 30-minute tour of the grounds, talking about the fruit trees, vegetation, history of the land and Martinez adobe home. She also took us through the tunnel to view the murals of John Muir’s life. When we went to the home for the guided tour, the docent gave a long-winded lecture that was the same stuff we learned in the movie. As we were pressed for time, we ducked out and just did the self-guided tour of the home, which is interesting. There is a parking lot, gift shop, visitor center and restrooms available. What struck me most about the Muir home is the proximity to freeways and urban sprawl, which went against everything John Muir stood for. As you walk down the hill from the home, the most visible building is the 7-11 across the street. I wish they had been able to set aside more land for the home. Still, a little history is better than none, right?
