点评:We took two excursions from Arles with Camargue Alpilles Safaris. In the morning we took the Circuit Découverte de la Camargue with Julian and in the afternoon we took the Circuit Découverte des Alpilles Provence with Jean Michel. Both guides were very knowledgeable, and we had a great time despite the rather chilly weather and high winds. In the morning we saw rice fields, the bulls used in the Camargue games, like bullfights except that the bulls are honored and not killed (although the human participants sometimes are), and the local horses, white (as adults) and rather small, and we visited the coastal town of Stes. Maries. But it was the avian fauna of the Camargue that was truly amazing! Of about 600 bird species in France, about 400 are found in the Camargue area. We saw many species, most notably hundreds or maybe thousands of flamingos. During the afternoon, we ascended into the hills and visited the ruins of a Roman acueduct that brought water to Arles and was also used to drive a flour mill in Roman times. We also saw the lovely towns of St. Rémy (where Van Gogh lived and painted toward the end of his life) and Les Baux (from which the word bauxite is derived). It was a day well spent: we learned a lot and saw beautiful landscapes, picturesque towns, and interesting fauna and flora.

Maries)。
