Great Dive into Wilmington History for ALL Ages!

点评：Really an informative and well-done museum. They cover fossils, boating in the river, Native history in the region, the early days of Wilmington's settlement, the Civil War (this area is especially impressive, with two massive dioramas previously in the now-defunct Blockade Runner & Maritime Museums), Reconstruction, the Jim Crow era, modernization, space, local ecosystems/natural history, and even Michael Jordan. Way cool. We spent an hour and a half here. The Civil War diorama of Fort Fisher is probably the most informative museum model I've ever seen. I would have like to see more information about the shipbuilding industry, personally, but that's my favorite subject so I am likely in the minority with that.
Two notes: 1/ they do a kids story time on Saturday mornings at 10am. If you are going without kids, just be aware that children will flood the exhibits around 11, and it will get loud. I was caught off guard lol. But, they mostly flocked to the space exhibits which were interactive and colorful, so it was not a disruption to me and my wife. 2/ the ecosystems & natural history exhibit in the Michael Jordan gallery downstairs looks like it's just for kids - but don't skip it! So many cool fossils, shark teeth, bones, etc in the pull-out drawers in each exhibit. We felt like kids again, looking at all the cool wildlife and nature items. Very fun. They have hand sanitizer right outside this exhibit for a reason... we took advantage of that.
Bonus: if you're a Doctor Who fan, they have a space screwdriver in the space exhibit that I swear is the closest thing to a real life sonic screwdriver you'll ever see.
This was $8 per adult and worth every penny. We have been coming to Wilmington for years and never took the time to learn about its history, and this museum did an excellent job really educating us about the area and providing context for the place.
