Stunning Views and Great History – Go Early and Expect Crowds!

点评：Hiking Diamond Head is an absolute classic Oahu experience, and we are so glad we did it!
Even with the timed reservation system, it was very, very busy - many times, we were walking in a single-file line of people up the trail. We highly recommend booking the earliest 6:00 AM – 8:00 AM slot. It kept us out of the intense heat on the way up, though it was already getting sunny and quite warm by the time we headed down. Make sure you reserve entry AND parking if you are driving.
Tip on the route: We chose to take the easier path on the way up after you exit the tunnel (to the right is a steep 99-step staircase versus to the left is a gradual outdoor path), and then we circled around to take the steep stairs on the way down. That way we got to experience both routes. This worked out perfectly for us! My son absolutely loved exploring the tunnel and the old military bunker along the trail.
The views from the summit are spectacular. Because the lookout spaces are quite small and crowded, you do have to wait in a bit of a line to get to the viewpoints, and it can be tough to get a clear family photo without other people in it. The top viewpoints are very crowded. Just try to be patient and you will be fine.
Before leaving, we stopped at the great little gift shop at the base of the trail and picked up some magnets and stickers to remember the trip. Definitely add this hike to your itinerary - just go early to beat the heat and expect a crowd at the top!
