点评:One of Hawaii’s most familiar sites is the Diamond Head State Monument. The crater was formed 300,000 years ago. We were here many years ago when our children were young. At that time, we were able to climb more than 200 step stairs to the top and enjoy the wonderful views. Things have changed quite a bit since our first visit.
I understand the 0.8-mile hike from the trailhead to the summit, is uneven in places, steep and strenuous, but the views I believe are as great as our first visit. Some handrails are provided. The distance from the crater floor to the summit is 560 feet and not recommended for those not in great physical shape.
Entry to the trailhead is through a 225-foot tunnel. You can choose to walk to the trailhead from the entrance or drive. Hawaiian residents with proper identification have free entry and parking while non-residents must pay $5.00 per person plus $10 per vehicle. Non-residents must make Normal operating hours are from 6 am to 6 pm. It is suggested one arrive early to beat the crowds and heat. The last reservation to hike is 4 pm.
This is not a family-friendly venture if you have young children. Only service animals are allowed. Suggested to allot 1.5 to 2 hours for the climb. Reservations can be made online 30 days in advance but there are no refunds if it is raining or your plans change. If I was younger, I might have attempted the hike.
