点评:Here’s a short account of my visit to Mikkira Station Koala Sanctuary on 27 January 2026.
I’d been looking forward for ages to finally seeing wild koalas up close, ever since I booked a full-day tour out of Port Lincoln with one of the local operators about six months ago. Unfortunately, the day before the trip — which was meant to finish at the koala sanctuary — I got an email saying the tour had been cancelled due to low numbers. I was offered a later date or a refund, but as I was heading on to Adelaide, the refund was the only real option.
Pretty disappointed about missing out on the koalas, I decided to take a chance and ring the sanctuary directly — and it turned out to be a stroke of luck. The owner, Helen, kindly offered to come and pick me up from my hotel.
Out at the sanctuary, I learned all about how the koalas were introduced there 54 years ago and how they’ve thrived ever since, growing into a healthy population of around 200 animals. After about two hours of walking through the reserve, we counted 38 or 39 lovely koalas, either sitting or snoozing in the low eucalyptus trees.
Along the way, several kangaroo families casually hopped past us, completely unfazed, and we even spotted two emus running in the distance. An unforgettable experience.
A huge thank you to Helen for her pragmatic kindness and for an afternoon I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. I’ve added a few photos and videos — and if anyone is on the fence about whether to make time for a visit or do something else while in Port Lincoln or nearby, don’t hesitate. This is an absolute must.
Koalas are a threatened species and deserve far more attention than they currently get, so awareness and understanding can keep growing.
Thank you again, Helen, for a truly wonderful afternoon.
