点评:This rescue centre claims to care for rescued turtles that cannot be returned to the sea. All I witnessed was badly injured turtles, either floating lifeless or swimming in a circle in bare circular tanks with no stimulation, or anything to resemble their natural habitat.
These are totally inhumane conditions. According to the WWF Keeping turtles in circular tanks with no habitat or enrichment is a severe form of animal neglect that causes intense physical suffering and psychological stress. Turtles are complex ectotherms with strict environmental requirements; forcing them to live in a bare, rounded enclosure is a slow death sentence.
• No Place to Bask (Slow Death): Turtles are cold-blooded and must leave the water to completely dry off, regulate their body temperature, and absorb UV light. Without a dry basking spot, their shells will soften and rot, and they will develop painful, fatal illnesses like Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) and respiratory infections.
• Constant Exposure and Stress: In the wild, turtles rely on plants, rocks, and corners to hide from predators. A completely bare tank leaves them feeling completely exposed 24/7. The curved glass also distorts their vision, destroying their spatial awareness and causing them to pace or claw frantically against the walls in a constant state of panic.
• Toxic Water Accumulation: Turtles produce a massive amount of waste. Small, circular tanks typically cannot support the heavy-duty filtration systems required to break down this waste. Within days, the water fills with toxic ammonia, which burns the turtle’s eyes, skin, and lungs.
• Muscle Atrophy and Deformities: Turtles need deep water to dive, swim, and build muscle. Cramping them into a small space restricts their growth and causes painful skeletal deformities.
One particular turtle had been in the same tank since 2019. I asked why they do not euthanise and the reply was it is not their policy?
I am sure the centre receives, treats and releases those turtles that can be returned to the sea but I do not believe it appropriate to keep the others alive in such conditions.
This was a distressing visit and I came away conflicted and wondering if the ones they could not release were being kept for the benefit of tourists rather that the turtles.
