Had a great day but it’s not worth the hype

点评：I agree with one of the reviews here that says while it’s enjoyable it’s definitely not worth all the hype nor is it a must do. We chose to do it with a tour guide, which I think is the best option. We paid a little over $200 - by the time you’ve paid for your rental car, cost to park your car at your resort, gas and any parking fees for the attractions, it may be costlier doing it yourself.
The company we chose had an AC problem in their van so they offered a private tour for free. The guide was super knowledgeable and it was great having all that info - from explanations of different plant species to what it’s like hanging with Woody Harrelson whose kids whom he grew up with.
That said I didn’t find the road to be as scary or dangerous as everyone makes out. yes there are lots of curves, but it’s not like you’re hanging on the edge of a cliff like in the Amalfi coast. Was anything I saw mind blowing beautiful? no. the black sand Beach is interesting but I don’t like black sand. I’ve seen red sand beaches in Greece and I’ve certainly seen better waterfalls all over the Caribbean. I would say the Arboretum was probably my favorite as I saw some trees I’ve never seen anywhere else but overall is rd to hana skippable? yes, in fact, I would argue that Maui is skippable.
Unless you live on the West Coast, I’m baffled why anyone would come there more than once. there’s just as much beauty in parts of the Caribbean and Mexico w better snorkeling for a far lower price.
