点评:The Good:
Oak Alley itself is very beautiful. The gardens and the alley are well cared for, and make for some amazing photographs.
The interpreter at the plantation about the slave trade was very good but see my other notes for why it felt still strange.
Not-So Good:
- If you are expecting somber but respectful atmosphere for the horrific slave trade of the 19th and 20th centuries, you will not find it at this plantation. The interpretation outside by the cabins was great but it felt very strange to listen to twangy southern music at the gift shop and bar then turn around and be literally a stones throw away from the slave cabins. People were also taking selfies and photos smiling in front of the cabins and we just found it very strange. We are not American however, so maybe that is just the culture?
- The house tour was very brief and very much focused on the owners of the plantation. You could tell they wanted to shuffle as many people through as they could to make the most money. Our guide was good, but almost too funny? The house was literally built by slaves, so her humor threw me at first. We are Canadian, and at a Residential School site in Canada if you were laughing and making jokes it would be VERY frowned upon. For some reason I expected the same here
- On that note, do your own research about the plantation and the Atlantic Slave Trade before you arrive. Our guide seemed a little squeamish/unknowledgeable about the topic and did not talk about it at all on the bus out. She almost openly admitted that she does not like to talk about it and knows too little about it to have a conversation about it. I encourage tour companies to educate their guides especially if they are going to have them deal with such a sensitive topic. It is a part of history, it happened. People, especially unknowing tourists, should be somewhat prepared for what to expect when they arrive and their guide can help there. The young man who talked about slavery outside was great, but again, a gift shop? Really? Just sat with us wrong.
