点评:Belmont Mansion is to Nashville, Tennessee, what Monmouth is to Natchez, what Barrington Hill is to Roswell, what Hay House is to Macon and Boone Hall is to Charleston. Built between 1849 and 1853, at 1900 Belmont Boulevard, at Aklen Avenue, it was one of the most elaborate antebellum homes in the South with 36 rooms and 19,000-square feet of space. Situated at the top of a hill, Belmont featured covered balconies with cast iron railing and trim surrounding the house to protect windows from the sun. Atop the house, a 10-foot octagonal cupola vented the house during the summer months. It also was used as an astronomical observatory used for viewing the stars, the estate and downtown Nashville. But the focal point of the estate is the Grand Salon, considered by architectural historians to be the most elaborate domestic interior built in antebellum Tennessee. Gilt frame mirrors hang over marble mantels, reflecting the elaborate gasoliers and elegantly furnished parlors. Much of the original Venetian glass still adorns the windows, doors and transoms. Beside the house was a T-shaped guest house and art gallery. The south wing of the guest house contained guest rooms and a bowling alley. The grounds included lavish gardens, conservatories, an aviary, lake and zoo. The zoo featured bears, monkeys, peacocks, a deer park, a white owl, singing birds, even alligators from Louisiana. The gardens contain five cast iron gazebos and the 105-foot water tower remains on the grounds and today serves as a Bell Tower for Belmont University. Today, the house is operated as a museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Since 1890, the estate has been used for educational functions. First as a girls academy, then Belmont College, now Belmont University.
