点评:One of the best art museums in the country, and a wonderful experience if you spend a little time there, all day, or even several days. The fact that admission and parking are free and there is a good-quality restaurant on-site is just icing on this many-layered art cake.
When we visited, the rotating exhibits that are in the first hall past the entrance included one of my favorite artists, Winslow Homer, so that was a great start. Ancient and Asian art is to the right past the picturesque courtyard; we went straight ahead through the long hallway (which had an amazing wall-high mural) and into the Great Hall, which goes up all three stories. The American Art showcases a variety of painting styles, along with some sculpture, and there is a focus on telling Cincinnati's story as the reginal center of American art back in the day.
The second floor is where you get a deep dive into Cincinnati's key role in the global potter art movement, especially the evolution of Rookwood Pottery and how it became an international phenomenon. Fascinating story and a lot of behind-the-scenes and personal information about the various characters involved in the movement. It is wild to think that a city in southern Ohio was the focus of something that became a global phenomenon.
If you have time, make the effort and go to the third floor where there are rotating contemporary art exhibits. That was apparently the original "studio classes" area of the museum, and the glass skylights make for some interesting plays of light and shadow on the various exhibits.
There's an excellent lunch to be had at the Terrace Cafe. They do recommend reservations, but we got there right when the opened and were seated promptly. The food is freshly prepared and reasonably priced.
The high point for us was the special exhibit by Yayoi Kusama and her endless view of polka-dotted pumpkins. We were able to buy tickets and go through at our designated time without delay (probably because it was the middle of the week). It was the kind of thing you see once and never, ever, forget.
All in all a great day and an excellent way to get immersed in all kinds of art.
